Day 1 Highlights at TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT : Pitch-Competition and Meet-and-Greet 2018

The city of Johannesburg hosted the annual TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT for the 2nd consecutive year. The organizers shook things up with a new, open/participatory model to replace the traditional Investor Pitch in which startups are sequestrated for the panel benefits.

Instead, everything and everybody stayed in the room. This way, all attendees benefited from the following:

  • Networking with Entrepreneurs and Investors
  • Providing live feedback to presenting startups
  • Witnessing a real, professional investor pitch
  • Participating in the interaction between startups and potential investors.

The #TropicsPitchCompetition 2018 was a rare opportunity for the community of young African leaders and those from the Diaspora to not only witness what goes into a real entrepreneur pitch-to-investor event but to actually be active participants with the ability to shape the outcome of the pitch itself

Students from the University of Witswatersrand and Wits Business School and other students-preneur were encouraged to participate in the 5-minute Q&A sessions. Each presenting team was screened, and will be mentored and prepared to make a 10-minute Investor type presentation in February 2018 to a panel of 4 Investors and successful international Entrepreneurs. Afterwards, the Investor panel will have 7 minutes to provide constructive feedback.

So who will be taking part in the upcoming #TropicsBusinessMixer ?

  1. Three (3) to four (4) Presenting African Startup Companies mentored and selected to pitch at the #TropicsBusinessMixer this coming February 2019.
  2. Panel of 4 Judges (representing successful Entrepreneurs including Angel Investors).
  3. Mixed audience from both reputed business schools, business hubs or incubators and finally, the greater Business Communities.

Entrepreneurs from all across Africa and the Caribbean who did not take place in the 2nd annual TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT are welcome to submit their pitch-decks by email to the attention of our panel of investors between October 25th, 2018 and January 15th, 2019 by email at hello@tropicsbusinesssummit.com or tropicsbusinesssummit@outlook.com or tropics.info@gmail.com .

The public at large is invited to watch them pitch, compete and mix and mingle with business owners, angel investors, venture capitalists, investors, financial partners and community leaders while you support the continued growth of small business enterprises in Africa and the Caribbean.

A one-of-a-kind networking wine-tasting session with Backsberg Wine Cellars followed the Pitch Session at The Parktonian Protea Hotel by Marriott in Johannesburg, South Africa. Established and emerging SMEs and various financial institutions were urged to share their success stories and the reason behind their involvement within the TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT. For the second year in a row, the #TropicsMeetAndGreet was quite an exciting and fun-filled evening for both Entrepreneurs and Investing Companies.

Pan African and international partners proudly took part in the TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT Pitch session and Meet-and-Greet and these include : HD Consulting Paris from France, ARIES Investissements from the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), 24Karat Research and Productions from South Africa, Backsberg Wine Cellars from South Africa, SACONO from South Africa, Philani Development Centre from South Africa, Nexcom Consulting from France, TEA Group Ltd. from Nigeria, Ireland and Germany, AlizeLaVie Corporation from New York, Africa Business Radio from South Africa to name but a few.
